Watch this movie and realize if you’re a relatively healthy woman with an uncomplicated pregnancy, you have options. Put the horror stories your friends, coworkers and neighbors keep telling you about childbirth aside. The medical establishment uses and perpetualizes fear to keep us going to the hospital and complying with every intervention they throw on us whether we need it or not. You don’t have to agree with everything that is said in this movie, but it will definitely make you think and reconsider birth as we know it in the U.S.
The American College of OB/GYN’s and American Medical Association issued statements this year (see ACOG policy statement and AMA Resolution 205) renewing their long-standing opposition to homebirth and midwifery based on the hoopla this movie has stirred up in the media, because Ricki Lake has called hospital-based maternity care to task.
