The Battle of the Bulge has begun
Posted by melodieshouse on September 17, 2007
I decided that enough is enough. I now weigh about 10lbs more than I weighed when I was full-term with the twins, and I was just put on meds for high blood pressure last week. So I’m embarking on my first ever diet to lose 50lbs. My husband has a lot more to lose, he’s got type 2 diabetes that’s not in control and high blood pressure too. We decided we will go on a diet together and take time together to walk and ride our bikes. I did some research and decided we will do the South Beach Diet. Starting today.

Good for you! I love South Beach. It just makes so much sense! When I started, I got a lot of support on the message boards at prevention.com (they’re free, with a lot of nice supportive people there). I started “giving back” by answering questions from newbies, and eventually they asked me to be a “host.”
Alas, I cannot get my husband to follow South Beach (he isn’t obese and doesn’t have diabetes, but doesn’t exercise and could stand to lose a few around the middle). My kids don’t really follow it, either, because they’re teens and make their own choices. But the kids are a lot more open to eating whole grains and trying new things, so they’re eating healthier because they’re willing to try what I serve. With my husband, anything new is met with skepticism (“Lentils, eww!”).
Have you read the book? I really think it helps to be prepared, and pick a time to start when there won’t be too many difficult events like parties to navigate. I mean, sure you’re going to have to learn to exercise a little discipline because you aren’t going to stay home forever and never socialize, but if you’re starting with Phase I, your food choices are a bit more limited.
I could go on and on, but I’ll stop, and wish you the best of luck. If you ever have any questions about what’s allowed, etc. feel free to drop me a line, or visit us at the message boards.

I haven’t gotten the book yet but looked at a number of online resources including the SB website. I also feel this diet plan makes more sense than Atkins, and I like that it was formulated by a cardiologist looking for a diet that would work for people with insulin resistance. My husband has type 2 diabetes w/extreme insulin resistance. The ADA-approved meal plans with the exchanges are a joke, IMO, esp. for type 2 diabetics, b/c they’re carb-heavy and take no account of glycemic index or load.
I’m happy to report that I’ve lost 2lbs. after only 2 days on the diet. The biggest change I had to make was cutting out sugary drinks (sweet ice tea) and beer (I *LOVE* Sam Adams…but they got some of the highest-carb brews around) since I don’t eat much bread, rice, or potatoes and don’t really miss them. My biggest challenge is that I need to prepare more meals at home. With 4 kids ages 4 and under convenience is my game but eating out a lot, besides being expensive, often means too large portions, too much carbs and too much saturated fat.
Thanks for responding, and I’ll be sure to check out the Prevention message boards.

Good luck with the weight loss. I know it can be tough! I wish I could work out and do the diet with you… we could support each other.
I love the layout of your site. I showed it to my teenager because she loves butterflies.
I plan on adding your site to my “favorite sites” list as soon as I get the chance. Hope to “see” you soon!
